Good neighbours

image009Affligem has a rich history and impressive exports, but they don’t like to shout about it, as Alan Hope found out

Wouter Hollevoet, manager of the brewery of Affligem, is very proud to say the brewery is “perfectly integrated in the village” of the same name. It’s no wonder, since this may be the quietest brewery Belgian Beer & Food has ever visited. The neighbours here could sleep with their windows open every night of the year and they’d have nothing to complain about.

Affligem is a town of about 12,000 inhabitants in the province of Flemish Brabant, right where it turns into East Flanders. Historically, it was the centre of Belgium’s hop-growing industry, along with Asse and Aalst.
