A different drum

When you visit a brewery as a beer journalist, the drill is usually this: meet and greet, go for a tour of the brewery, settle down and sample the beers. In that order.

At Liefmans, though, the first port of call is the bar whose terrace overlooks the Scheldt river, which carries barges on their way to the mighty Port of Antwerp and points beyond. Liefmans makes beer, and very special beer at that, and it’s instructive that the beer comes first. It’s not the only thing Liefmans does differently
